In my fervent packing, I came across a 2006 desk calendar that reminded me — hour by hour — of my first week at Spring Arbor FMC. I got there at 9am that first Monday morning in August and had to immediately check with a fellow named Sam concerning a video of some sort. I had lunch with Kent that day and started unpacking books that afternoon. It was, as they say, my first day.
Someday down the road, I’ll come across my 2012 calendar and see that I left for Portage a few minutes before 8, got there at 9, and began a new chapter of ministry and service. I’ll see that I met new people, moved office furniture around, and accidentally bumped into the fire alarm. I will recall how the mundane was electrified by the beginning of a new reality. I will remember the faithful hand of God in this moment, just as I do as I wake up and remember my first day at SAFMC, way back in 2006.
