Music Education and Ben Folds

Ben Folds was co-host with Hoda on the Hoda and Kathy Lee show on NBC last week. He just tweeted a video highlight where he’s talking about losing music education in the schools, yet the culture is home to more and more a capella groups. You can watch the clip here.

I’m a musician.  I’ve been “worked with” by better musicians.  I get to work with up-and-comers. It’s an honor to be part of someone’s musical development, just as I’m so glad for the investment of professors and teachers over the years.  While it breaks my heart to see that the arts are being cut, it’s good to see that our humanity wants some kind of musical expression. People go to great lengths to scratch the itch!

I think it’s spiritual. Our voices are the primary instruments of creation, and something deep inside knows that the human voice does something that any other instrument can’t. I believe that the wall of sound created by a vocal group is matched by no other!

Kudos to Folds for what he’s doing. And kudos to all who equip musicians. Thanks for keeping art alive.
