Husqvarna vs. John Deere

My son Malachi is heartbroken over our brand new Husqvarna riding mower, mostly because he held a special place in his heart for the old John Deere Hydro 165 that I had scrapped at a junk yard. He’s quite sad about our new tractor. I’m happy with the mow time which has been dramatically lowered. Plus I’m not trying to rebuild anything or jump-start it from the Jeep every weekend, as I did with the Deere. Mac doesn’t see it that way. He just misses his John Deere and holds some pretty harsh feelings against the replacement.

I guess I can’t blame him. He’s been a Deere kid, as well as a Dear kid, since he was born. He’s also pretty smart.

I caught him putting a John Deere decal on the Husqvarna, its green and yellow brand colors clashing with the Husq’s orange and gray scheme. I say “caught”, although he did it while I wasn’t looking. Who would have thought that a 4 year old would possess such subtle tactical advance?

He says he likes the new tractor better, now that it has the right picture. And I guess that’s at least some progress toward the long lawn of reconciliation.
