Church for Rent, State Upset

USA Today (my favorite colorful paper with no big words) has an article today about holding public graduation ceremonies in churches and the impact on the separation of Church & State. Public Schools are seeking out larger sanctuaries for graduations because 1) They’re large enough — much bigger than even the school gym and 2) They’re relatively cheap. Also, many Sanctuaries have the added benefit of not smelling like the school gym.

I can see how some people might be offended to have their graduation in a dedicated religious building. I don’t know if I would have felt comfortable in some places for the same kind of reasons. Then again, if a Church does a good job of offering its place as a service to the community, that’s pretty great ministry. Either way, it’s coming to a head according to some sources familiar with the ACLU’s stance on the whole deal.
